Cube Lube

I can’t make this kind of stuff up.  Here is an advertisement for “Cube Lube” that ran in DC Comics cover dated June 1982.  Though I understand the intention is innocent, I find it hard to believe this ran in a comic book targeted at children.

   Now that I have a kid, I’m of two minds of this. Yes, I look at old comics with the Joker saying, “That’s such a boner!” etc. and chuckle. But I also know that the human mind is able to turn pretty much any word, concept, or phrase into obscenity. (“Whatcha doing?” “Peeling carrots.” “I bet you are! Heh heh…”) I (mildly) fear a future where nothing can be read without interpreting it as something dirty.

   I see nothing odd here….I don’t know if I could have won that Rubick’s Cube competition in 72 second if I hadn’t taken my cube apart, filed down all the rough edges and lubed it.

   Come on…all the kids were doing it.
