New Guns N’ Roses Album on Vinyl. Seriously?!?

So I’m walking along in Best Buy the other day and I come across a display rack for the just released (but criminally delayed) Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy”.  Back in the day I was a HUGE Guns N’ Roses fan.  Not just your typical, “I love Sweet Child O’ Mine” fan.  I knew all the lyrics to every song on their albums.  I had some bootlegs of older stuff, interview albums, etc.  Needless to say, I wasn’t too anxious about this new album as it’s just Axl and not the rest of the original band.

Here is a picture of the display rack I took with my camera phone.  Take a look at the items on the display rack, then scroll down.

When I noticed that larger item at the top, I thought… geez, they made a calendar for this P.O.S. album?  Bizarre.  Then I picked up the supposed calendar.  Oh no, they didn’t … Yes, the did!  They pressed this album onto vinyl!  Holy Magroly!  Maybe I’m just desperately out of touch with the music scene, but I didn’t think major music labels still pressed vinyl records.  I thought new vinyl albums were just relegated to obscure underground bands that Simon likes. 🙂

If you’re interested, you can order the vinyl Guns N’ Roses “Chinese Democracy” album from Best Buy by clicking here.  According to various websites, it was pressed on 180 gram vinyl.  Apparently, the vinyl album also comes with instructions for a free MP3 download of the entire album. That’s kind of a cool bonus feature.

Anyway, if I’m horribly out of touch and all albums have the vinyl option nowadays, feel free to blast me.

And if you are thinking, “How does Guns N’ Roses qualify to appear on a geek-related blog?”  Well, they appeared in a comic book.  So there… shut your pie-hole smarty-pants.

  1. Guns N’ Roses…that’s a GN’R album like a hollywood movie lot is a residential neighborhood. GN’R died in 1993. Hell Velvet Revolver is more GN’R than the namesake. (shakes head in shameful disbelief).

  2. You all are missing the point.

After the apocalypse we will only be able to listen to music on vinyl albums because all the electronics have been nuked.

And those bands with vinyl albums will have a huge leg up on all the bands who only released on CD – fools – so rebuilding your fan base will be much easier because any one can listen to a vinyl album using a needle and an empty toilet tube.

And what better way to forget about the debilitating hunger and giant radioactive rats than the sweet sweet sounds of GN’R Chinese Democracy echoing through the sewer tunnels of a shelled out hollow city?

    Axl is a genius.

  3. Check out Amazon. There is a resurgence in vinyl. They even released the Dark Knight soundtrack on vinyl.

  4. Vinyl is analog recording of an analog sound and analog recording by definition was, is and will be better than any digital approximation of it.
