Free Comic Book Day – This Saturday, May 2

Be sure to visit your local comic book shop this Saturday, May 2 – it’s Free Comic Book Day! What is “Free Comic Book Day” you ask? Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. How cool is that!

So stop by your local comic shop on Saturday, pick up something you’ve never read before FOR FREE, and expand your mind. Click here for a complete list of all the free comics that are being offered in conjunction with Free Comic Book Day.

If you have children/nephews/nieces, be sure to bring them too. Many of the comics are specifically geared towards getting children interested in comics (see the list below for kid-friendly comics being given away free on Saturday). Most comic shops really make an effort to make it a family-friendly event. The picture at the right is of my step-son back in 2005 at the Cosmic Cat Free Comic Book Day. Some of the shops in my hometown this year will feature face painting for kids, comic character appearances, giveaways, writer/artist signings, and more!

Some titles available for FREE this Saturday include:

  • Blackest Night #0 – This prelude to “Blackest Night” features an all-new story by writer Geoff Johns which leads directly into BLACKEST NIGHT #1.  The issue also features an introductory text page by Johns that sets the stage for new readers and a special guide to the various Corps that have recently emerged as forces in the world of GREEN LANTERN.
  • Avengers – An all-new story by Brian Michael Bendis featuring the mighty Thor and both the New and Dark Avengers against the frost-giant Ymir in a battle that will have terrifying consequences for the Marvel Universe – and for these heroes – in the days to come!
  • Aliens/Predator
  • Love and Capes
  • Wolverine: Origin of An X-Man
  • Simpsons – Bongo Comics Free-For-All!
  • Warhammer Fantasy
  • TMNT #1 25th Anniversary Reprint
  • Savage Dragon #148

  1. I’m so looking forward to picking up that TMNT #1 reprint. I’m also looking forward to getting Blackest Night and the Avengers story

  2. To find out what is going on at the cosmic cat, follow the website link above. We also start a little early, Friday evening after 5:00 we will have a limited selection of free comics plus fantasy/horror author John Urbancik will be doing a reading at 7:00 pm. Wine and assorted snacks will be offered for your enjoyment.

  3. Also make sure you thank the store you go to, whether the Cat or any other bookstore. Why? Because the publishers do not give the comics to the stores for free. They charge the stores and some of the comics can be expensive, that is why some of the comics may not be available. Stores also have to purchase a minimum number of comics from a set group of publishers to be an “Official FCBD Store”.
