I Unleashed Shagg Upon the World!

I Unleashed Shagg Upon the World by Jack Kirby

That’s right, True Believers… I Unleashed Shagg Upon the World! Let all beware!

(Well… maybe my mom unleashed Shag upon the world.  There’s probably a pretty good, “your momma” joke in there somewhere.)

What a great splash page!  I love it!  It was drawn by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers and appeared in Journey into Mystery #59 (1960).    This is some good ole-fashioned Kirby awesome-ness!  Prior to publishing Fantastic Four #1, Marvel was well-known for their “monster comics”.  Shagg is a great example of those.  To learn more about Marvel’s monster comics, click here.   For more information on Shagg, click here or click here.

Below is the cover to this Journey Into Mystery issue.  According to comics.org, this cover was done by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.  Since the cover and the splash page look so different, I gotta wonder if Kirby was actually involved with this cover.

Thanks to my good buddy Ravenface for sending me information on the monster Shagg.  I wonder if this monster was irredeemable?

  1. I’m really glad that you don’t have that extra ‘g’, which is, evidently, the source of Shagg’s great and terrible power.

  2. Todd – I totally agree! Why, for the love Pete, why?!??!

Chocotaco – See, on Facebook I have great and terrible power!!!
