{"id":117,"date":"2008-07-24T07:00:39","date_gmt":"2008-07-24T11:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/?p=117"},"modified":"2010-03-15T11:58:23","modified_gmt":"2010-03-15T15:58:23","slug":"the-origin-of-fables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/wordpress\/2008\/07\/24\/the-origin-of-fables\/","title":{"rendered":"The origin of &#8220;Fables&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re like every other comic book reader in the aughts, you&#8217;ve been reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billwillingham.com\/\">Bill Willingham&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fables_%28comic%29\">&#8220;Fables&#8221; from Vertigo<\/a>.  He has managed to create a real masterpiece within the comic book industry.  This is a comic that many treasure and won&#8217;t soon forget once it&#8217;s gone.<\/p>\n<p>Willingham&#8217;s done a fantastic job taking these characters of lore, combining them with a compelling story, fantasy elements, and great art. Many of you may not realize that this isn&#8217;t the first time Bill Willingham has tackled these concepts.  As he honed his craft, he made prior attempts to combine those same great elements.  I now proudly present to you the true origin of &#8220;Fables&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/dnd_comic.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hee hee.  \ud83d\ude42   Remember those Dungeons and Dragons ads from the back of comic books in the early 80&#8217;s?  I used to love those ads!  Believe it or not, this ad and several others were drawn by Bill Willingham.
