{"id":1214,"date":"2009-06-18T07:00:24","date_gmt":"2009-06-18T11:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/?p=1214"},"modified":"2009-06-18T01:30:29","modified_gmt":"2009-06-18T05:30:29","slug":"runaways-digest-8-finally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/18\/runaways-digest-8-finally\/","title":{"rendered":"Runaways Digest #8&#8230; finally!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a title=\"Runaways Digest Volume 8\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/catalog\/?id=11973\" class=\"broken_link\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Runaways Digest Volume 8 by Joss Whedon\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/runaways_digest8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a>Just last week, Marvel finally published <a title=\"Runaways digest volume 8\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/catalog\/?id=11973\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Runaways<\/em> Digest Volume 8<\/a>.\u00a0 This digest has been a long time in coming.\u00a0 It reprints <em>Runaways<\/em> #25-30, written by Joss Whedon (<em>Buffy<\/em>, <em>Firefly<\/em>, <em>Astonishing X-Men<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Runaways<\/em> Digest Volume 7 was published in August 2007.\u00a0 Seriously, nearly a two year wait between digests! The final issue in this collection (issue #30) was published a year ago.\u00a0 Previous digests were released every six months.\u00a0 So why did it take so long to reprint this into digest form?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Normally I wouldn&#8217;t have been so bothered by the wait, but in this case the wait was a result of Marvel squeezing every dime they could out of Joss Whedon&#8217;s name on this book.\u00a0 Up until issue #25, <em>Runaways <\/em>had been written by Brian K. Vaughn.\u00a0 Those early issues had been collected in several digests, which helped increase exposure in bookstores and with younger readers.\u00a0\u00a0 The series did moderately well.\u00a0 Once Joss Whedon came on the book, Marvel capitalized on the opportunity.\u00a0 Rather than simply continuing to print digest-sized books, Marvel published these full-size collections first:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a title=\"Runaways: Dead End Kids Premiere Hardcover\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/catalog\/?id=8790\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Runaways: Dead End Kids<\/em> Premiere Hardcover<\/a> published July 2008<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Runaways: Dead End Kids Premiere Hardcover\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/catalog\/?id=8767\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Runaways: Dead End Kids<\/em> Premiere Hardcover<\/a> published July 2008 &#8211; Direct Market Edition<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Runaways: Dead End Kids\" href=\"http:\/\/marvel.com\/catalog\/?id=10425\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Runaways: Dead End Kids<\/em> Softcover<\/a> published in December 2008<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once they&#8217;d squeezed every drop of cash out of these full-size collections, they finally decided to print a digest version.\u00a0 I know I&#8217;m griping, but it matters to me because I started with the digest-sized books.\u00a0 I love that format!\u00a0 Very compact and affordable!\u00a0\u00a0 Highly portable and only $9.99 for six collected issues.\u00a0 It was hard to wait two years just to read this story.\u00a0 From a business perspective, I can understand what Marvel was trying to accomplish.\u00a0 However, it doesn&#8217;t mean as a reader that I&#8217;m happy about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now that the Whedon issues are behind us, Marvel can return to printing the digest versions on a more regular basis.\u00a0 Right, Joe?<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"sharedaddy sd-sharing-enabled\"><div
