Today kicks off my recap of celebrities, costumes, events, friends, swag and more!\u00a0 While I&#8217;ll cover a lot, this is only a fraction of what took place during Dragon*Con 2009.\u00a0 At certain times, there were as many as 50 different simultaneous sessions going on! This program was astonishing!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Last year&#8217;s Dragon*Con was so amazing, I didn&#8217;t think this year could hold a candle. Well, I was wrong.\u00a0 This year was as good as, if not better, than last year!\u00a0 One of my goals was to take more pictures this year.\u00a0 In 2008, I took a little over 400 decent pictures.\u00a0 This year I managed to take over 800 pictures, with over 600 of them worth keeping!\u00a0 If you want to check out my pictures, they&#8217;ve been uploaded to <a title=\"Once Upon a Geek Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/sets\/72157622201322451\/\">Flickr<\/a> and <a title=\"The Unique Geek Photo Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theuniquegeek.com\/v\/dc2009\" class=\"broken_link\">THE UNIQUE GEEK photo gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 Additionally, I&#8217;ll be featuring some of my favorites here over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hardest part about coming back from Dragon*Con is re-acclimatizing to regular life.\u00a0 After complete immersion in the geek-lifestyle, it&#8217;s hard to readjust to &#8220;normal&#8221; people. Just imagine four days surrounded by people with similar interests and that understand every vague reference you can imagine; phrases like the following are understood by everyone there: <em>Docking Bay 94<\/em>, <em>Ootini<\/em>, <em>Kobayashi Maru<\/em>, <em>Red Shirt<\/em>, <em>Can&#8217;t stop the signal<\/em>, <em>It was a bad call Ripley<\/em>, <em>Pwned<\/em>, <em>My Precious<\/em>, <em>Pre-Crisis<\/em>, or <em>It&#8217;s Clobberin&#8217; Time<\/em>.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t help but get caught up in the experience.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like an affirmation of everything geek.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like Christmas for adults!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">FRIDAY<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My flight into Atlanta arrived around 9am.\u00a0 Serv got there just before me, so we caught up in the airport.\u00a0 We hung around for a bit waiting for our friends Holly and Race.\u00a0 We grabbed a beer (remember it&#8217;s only 9am) agreeing that it&#8217;s only alcoholism if you attend meetings.\u00a0 Holly arrived on-time, but no Race.\u00a0 Huh?\u00a0 Yeah, super-punctual Race missed his flight.\u00a0 Race-less, we grabbed the MARTA and headed to our hotel.\u00a0 After getting off at the Peachtree station, we knew we were in the right place when we saw someone dressed up as the Mad Hatter and an overweight guy in a Star Trek costume.\u00a0 Bingo!\u00a0 We&#8217;d arrived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Immediately after checking into the hotel, I went to get my Dragon*Con badge at the Sheraton (most sessions have Dragon*Con staff checking for badges).\u00a0 The line for pre-registration badge pick-up was about three hours long.\u00a0 Aaaarrrrggghhhh!\u00a0 I was really bummed because I was gonna miss some panels I wanted to attend.\u00a0 Thankfully someone informed us that certain lines up front were vacant.\u00a0 It appears the majority of people checking in had last names starting with A, B, or S.\u00a0 So I side-stepped the rest of the line and walked right up.\u00a0 In-and-out in five minutes!\u00a0 I guess that makes up for the 45 minutes I had to wait last year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sadly we missed the William Shatner\/Leonard Nimoy panel.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard it was great!\u00a0 There is some video available online, so I&#8217;ll be sure to check that out later.\u00a0 I quickly zipped over to wait for the <em>Torchwood<\/em> panel.\u00a0 While there I got my picture taken with a life-size TARDIS replica from Doctor Who.\u00a0 This thing was amazing!\u00a0 The owner handed me the key, suggesting I unlock it and step in just like the Doctor.\u00a0 There was a sound system inside playing the background hum of the TARDIS as well as the occasional Cloister Bell!\u00a0 Totally cool!\u00a0 The owner explained they have different windows and decal treatments to emulate the different eras of Doctor Who (as the TARDIS has changed slightly over the years).\u00a0 It&#8217;s currently decked out to appear as the TARDIS 11th Doctor Matt Smith will be traveling in.\u00a0 In addition to touring with the replica TARDIS, the owner also sells Tom Baker scarf replicas that she knits.\u00a0 I still have my 12 foot scarf my Great Aunt knitted for me back in the 1980s.\u00a0 We talked quite a bit about the different scarves worn in the show and the efforts she&#8217;s going through to ensure accuracy. Really neat lady.\u00a0 You should check out her website, the <a title=\"The Witty Little Knitter.com\" href=\"http:\/\/wittylittleknitter.com\/\">WittyLittleKnitter.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3905892357\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Shag escapes in the TARDIS!\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3445\/3905892357_0a5efbc603.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <em>Torchwood <\/em>panel was pretty good.\u00a0 It featured Gareth David Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and James Marsters (Captain John on <em>Torchwood <\/em>and Spike on <em>Buffy<\/em>).\u00a0 Last year these two did the same panel together, so there were several rehashed stories. If I hadn&#8217;t attended this same panel last year, I probably would have enjoyed this more.\u00a0 New stuff included some good discussion on ramifications of the recent &#8220;Children of Earth&#8221; storyline, as well as some unrelated anecdotes from Marsters.\u00a0 All-in-all it was a good panel and I&#8217;m glad I went.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3906134070\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Gareth David Lloyd (Ianto Jones) from Torchwood at DragonCon 2009\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2445\/3906134070_190df1a952.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3905357063\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"James Marsters (Captain John on Torchwood and Spike on Buffy) at DragonCon 2009\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3478\/3905357063_3287a32ce3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next up was the Avengers Symposium on <em>Assembled<\/em> 1 &amp; 2 in the Hyatt.\u00a0 The first 30 minutes was an interesting literary analysis of the comic book super-team the Avengers and the <em>Assembled<\/em> books by <a title=\"Avengers Assembed.net by Van Allen Plexico\" href=\"http:\/\/www.avengersassemble.net\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Van Allen Plexico<\/a>.\u00a0 Then it turned into a Q&amp;A session with Van, George Perez, Keith RA DeCandido, George Kopec, and Joe Crowe. Great panel!\u00a0 This was also considered the book release for <em>Assembled 2: The Unauthorized Guide to Earth&#8217;s Mightiest Heroes and Their Foes<\/em>, so I purchased my copy and got the whole panel to sign it.\u00a0 Hooray!\u00a0 Also on sale was <em>Super Comics Trivia!<\/em>, a book containing questions and answers from ten years of Van Plexico&#8217;s comic book trivia tournaments at Dragon*Con.\u00a0 Surprisingly, I&#8217;m on the cover of the book!\u00a0 Seriously, I&#8217;m not kidding!\u00a0 I was lucky enough to participate in one of Van&#8217;s Marvel\/DC Comics Jeopardy tournaments a few years ago.\u00a0 Someone happened to take a picture of the game and that made the cover of the book.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, Van posted this picture to his website a few years ago. I&#8217;m the guy closest to the camera in the blue shirt below.\u00a0\u00a0 The back of my head is on Amazon.com!\u00a0 I&#8217;m famous!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Super-Comics-Trivia-Allen-Plexico\/dp\/1442110910\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Super Comics Trivia Book from DragonCon - Look, I'm on the cover!\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/comic_trivia.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0984139206?tag=plexiconet-20&amp;camp=14573&amp;creative=327641&amp;linkCode=as1&amp;creativeASIN=0984139206&amp;adid=1YZX17D544VBCET20WEG&amp;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Assembled 2 release party at DragonCon\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/assembled2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After that was the <em>A-Team<\/em> panel featuring Dirk Benedict (Faceman on <em>A-Team<\/em> and Starbuck on the original B<em>attlestar Galactica<\/em>) and Dwight Schultz (Howling Mad Murdock).\u00a0 They really had chemistry and were lots of fun to watch.\u00a0 They were definitely old pros on the convention circuit and knew exactly what would get the crowd cheering.\u00a0 They had some really funny and surprising things to say about George Peppard and Mr. T.\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad I made the time for this panel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3906146136\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"A-Team Panel - Dwight Schultz and Dirk Benedict at DragonCon 2009\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2676\/3906146136_69c1d29355.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then I hit artist&#8217;s alley.\u00a0 My goal&#8230; to get an autograph from George Perez on an old <em>Flash <\/em>comic featuring a Firestorm back-up story he drew.\u00a0 When I arrived at Perez&#8217;s table, turned out he was doing head sketches!\u00a0 Awesome!\u00a0 In addition to signing the comic, Perez sketched Firestorm for me!\u00a0 In the <em>Assembled <\/em>panel, Perez mentioned he always likes to add something extra when delivering an art piece.\u00a0 I&#8217;d asked for Firestorm, so he took the time to add in an &#8220;extra&#8221; of Professor Stein&#8217;s astral head!\u00a0 To see the Firestorm sketch you&#8217;ll have to watch future posts on my other blog, FIRESTORM FAN.com.\u00a0 Needless to say, George Perez was super cool!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3906148272\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"George Perez and Shag at DragonCon 2009\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3426\/3906148272_503f280efe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The last event of the evening for me was in the comic book track, Marvel vs. DC Family Feud.\u00a0 The host, Van Plexico, changed the format this year from the usual <em>Jeopardy <\/em>to <em>Family Feud<\/em>, which allowed many more players to participate.\u00a0 He selected returning champions and finalists from previous years, so I got to play!\u00a0 On our team (dubbed the &#8220;DC&#8221; team) was my good buddy Michael Bailey (from <a title=\"Views from the Longbox\" href=\"http:\/\/fortressofbaileytude.com\/viewsfromthelongbox\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Views from the Longbox<\/a> and <a title=\"Fortress of Baileytude\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fortressofbaileytude.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Fortress of Baileytude<\/a>), a Dragon*Con\u00a0acquaintance Mike Stewart, another Dragon*Con\u00a0acquaintance named Michael, and two other guys named Michael.\u00a0 Seriously, on our team there were five guys named Michael and one guy named Shag.\u00a0 And if you know me at all, then you know how ironic this really was.\u00a0 On the opposing team (dubbed the &#8220;Marvel&#8221; team) was our good friend <a title=\"Choco Taco&#039;s Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/chocotaco777.livejournal.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Choco Taco<\/a>, publisher <a title=\"Lars Pearson\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lars_Pearson\">Lars Pearson<\/a>, and four other blokes.\u00a0 It was a close contest with some unexpected survey results, but in the end our &#8220;DC&#8221; team triumphed!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/onceuponageek\/3906158532\/in\/set-72157622201322451\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The DC team at Marvel\/DC Family Feud at DragonCon 2009\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2583\/3906158532_24b28ea8a5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rest of the night was spent hanging out with friends and taking copious amounts of pictures.\u00a0 Sadly around Midnight the battery in my camera died.\u00a0 I was just about to snap a picture of Barbie Jedi when it happened.\u00a0 Aarrggghhh!\u00a0 Sadly I never got the picture, but thanks to the wonders of Flickr, I found that someone with the online handle <a title=\"Barbie Jedi by Charfade\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/charfade\/3898132830\/\">Charfade <\/a>did get her picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/charfade\/3898132830\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Barbie Jedi at DragonCon 2009 taken by Charfade\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2668\/3906132596_a890b29b7e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sometime around 2am or 3am we all retired for the night.\u00a0 In our room was Serv, Ravenface, Choco Taco, Race, Jon, and myself.\u00a0 Six guys all packed into one hotel room.\u00a0 It&#8217;s no surprise that what happened next can only be described as THE WAR OF THE SNORE!\u00a0 I believe I have permanent hearing damage from the racket we created with our snoring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Great first day!  Wonderful to see friends again and have so much fun!  I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m forgetting things, so there may be addendums throughout the week.
