However, I&#8217;ve gone back and picked up just about every major appearance of the character since the early 1960s. Here are a few of my favorite covers from all the various Aquaman series and appearances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This Alan Davis drawing was used as the cover to Aquaman #17 (2004).\u00a0 What an amazing piece!\u00a0 The perspective is really striking and it truly demonstrates Aquaman&#8217;s super-strength.\u00a0 One of my all-time favorites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover01.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #17\" width=\"400\" height=\"603\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here is Aquaman&#8217;s first appearance from More Fun Comics #73 (1941).\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t get the cover since he was only a back-up feature.\u00a0 Sorry for the size, it was the best image I could find of this page.\u00a0 Notice that Aquaman&#8217;s gloves are yellow.\u00a0 They were yellow through pretty much the entire Golden Age and changed to green in the Silver Age.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">If you want to see more of the splash pages from the Golden Age Aquaman stories (or any Aquaman comic book cover), check out the fantastic <a title=\"The Aquaman Cover Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/aqua.gjovaag.com\/gal\/00.html\">Aquaman Cover Gallery<\/a>.\u00a0 What a great site!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover01b.jpg\" alt=\"More Fun Comics #73\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Don&#8217;t piss off Golden Age Aquaman&#8230; he&#8217;ll throw a polar bear at your ass.\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 Here is the splash page from More Fun Comics #85 (1942).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover01a.jpg\" alt=\"More Fun Comics #85\" width=\"400\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here is Aquaman&#8217;s first solo appearance from Showcase #30 (1961).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover02.jpg\" alt=\"Showcase Presents #30\" width=\"400\" height=\"590\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Shortly after his try-out in Showcase, Aquaman graduated to his own comic.\u00a0 Here is the cover to Aquaman #1 (1962).\u00a0 Look out tadpole!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover03.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #1\" width=\"400\" height=\"602\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Not a special issue, but simply a cover that I like &#8211; Aquaman #9 (1963).\u00a0 I think the sea horse and waves look cool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover04.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #9\" width=\"400\" height=\"582\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The wedding of Aquaman and Mera in Aquaman #18 (1964).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover05.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #18\" width=\"400\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">One of my favorite covers from the original Aquaman series &#8211; Aquaman #42 (1968).\u00a0 Very creative layout and lighting from the brilliant Nick Cardy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover06.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #42\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I love this Nick Cardy cover &#8211; Aquaman #56 (1971)!\u00a0 It&#8217;s so ridiculous that it&#8217;s awe-to-the-sum!\u00a0 This was actually the first Aquaman back-issue I purchased.\u00a0 It also happens to be the last issue from the original series.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover07.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #56\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Adventure Comics #452 (1977). This is the issue where Black Manta murders Aquaman&#8217;s infant son.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover09.jpg\" alt=\"Adventure Comics #452\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I like the dual peril on this cover by the great Rick Buckler.\u00a0 Nice way to show the dilemma. Adventure Comics #478 (1980).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover08.jpg\" alt=\"Adventure Comics #478\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;m a real sucker for old plots that are dependent upon Aquaman&#8217;s need for water every hour.\u00a0 My favorite bits are when they actually clock his dependency.\u00a0 As if he would automatically keel over at exactly 60 minutes without water.\u00a0 Hysterical!\u00a0 Here is Aquaman #44 (1969).\u00a0 While the premise is ridiculous, the perspective, faces, word balloons, and lighting are amazing in this cover by Nick Cardy.\u00a0 One of my favorites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover10.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #44\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Another great example of using Aquaman&#8217;s dependency on water as a plot device.\u00a0 Check out the condensation coming off the pitcher!\u00a0 Too funny!\u00a0 Great Neal Adams cover here on Superman&#8217;s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #115 (1968).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover11.jpg\" alt=\"Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #115\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Team-ups!\u00a0 Team-ups!\u00a0 Team-ups!\u00a0 Here is Brave and the Bold #82 (1969).\u00a0 Check out that zombie look on Aquaman&#8217;s face!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover12.jpg\" alt=\"Brave and the Bold #82\" width=\"400\" height=\"595\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Brave and the Bold #142 (1978).\u00a0 I&#8217;m digging the telepathic circles!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover13.jpg\" alt=\"Brave and the Bold #142\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">World&#8217;s Finest #203 (1971).\u00a0 Great Neal Adams cover, but let&#8217;s be honest about this&#8230; If Superman lost his sight, would he really be this useless?\u00a0 And even so, would he really turn to Aquaman for help?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover14.jpg\" alt=\"World's Finest #203\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">You can always count on old-school fake-death stories to be fun.\u00a0 Here is Aquaman&#8217;s funeral from Aquaman #30 (1966).\u00a0 I love that Metamorpho is a pall-bearer.\u00a0 What the funk is that about?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover15.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v1 #30\" width=\"400\" height=\"590\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Another Aquaman death story, this time from Justice League of America #122 (1975).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover16.jpg\" alt=\"Justice League of America #122\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Justice League of America Annual #2 (1984) was important because in the story Aquaman officially disbanded the Justice League.\u00a0 He then reformed a new League with several young heroes-in-training.\u00a0 It was a neat concept, but sadly the &#8220;Justice League Detroit&#8221; era is not fondly remembered by many.\u00a0 For me, it was the first time I collected JLA on a regular basis, so I love this era!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover18.jpg\" alt=\"Justice League of America Annual #2\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Just a nice cover of Aquaman and Mera from the &#8220;Justice League Detroit&#8221; era.\u00a0 I love it when they frame the cover with the team faces!\u00a0 Justice League of America #242 (1985).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover17.jpg\" alt=\"Justice League of America #242\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The first appearance of the blue suit &#8211; Aquaman mini-series #1 (1986).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover19.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v2 #1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The second Aquaman mini-series #1 (1989).\u00a0 David Devaje created a very interesting cover for this issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover20.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v3 #1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Atlantis Chronicles (1990) was an outstanding mini-series by Peter David that explored the mythical origins of Atlantis.\u00a0 This series created the foundation for Atlantis that is still used today.\u00a0 Beautiful art by Esteban Maroto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover39.jpg\" alt=\"Atlantic Chronicles #1\" width=\"400\" height=\"613\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A nice Kevin Maguire cover from the second Aquaman ongoing series &#8211; Aquaman #3 (1992).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover21.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v4 #3\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Another Kevin Maguire piece as Aquaman gets his revenge on Black Manta for killing his son &#8211; Aquaman #6 (1992).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover22.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v4 #6\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Aquaman #0 (1994) from the third ongoing series drawn by Marty Egeland.\u00a0 In the story by Peter David, Aquaman goes bat-sh!t crazy after losing his hand.\u00a0 So what does he do? He shoves a harpoon into the pulpy-meaty stub of an arm that he&#8217;s left with.\u00a0 Niiiiiiiiiice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover23.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v5 #0\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The return of Mera in this yummy cover by Marty Egeland &#8211; Aquaman #12 (1995).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a shame she&#8217;s always crazy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover38.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v5 #12\" width=\"400\" height=\"608\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cool cover by Jim Calafiore during Peter David&#8217;s tenure on the book &#8211; Aquaman #17 (1996).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover24.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v5 #17\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Another great Marty Egeland cover &#8211; Aquaman #23 (1996).\u00a0 This one features many of the superheroes with ties to Atlantis &#8211; (L to R) Tsunami, Aqualad, Aquaman, Power Girl (at the time she was thought to have come from Atlantis), Arion, and Neptune Perkins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover25.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v5 #23\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">One last great Marty Egeland cover &#8211; Aquaman #24 (1996).\u00a0 I just love the spinning hook aimed right at the exposed throat.\u00a0 Totally bad ass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover26.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v5 #24\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Justice Leagues: Justice League Atlantis (2001). Not a great comic, but a neat idea forming a JLA with members solely from Atlantis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover27.jpg\" alt=\"Justice Leagues\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">JLA #75 (2003) &#8211; The conclusion of &#8220;The Obsidian Age&#8221;, subtitled &#8220;The Hunt for Aquaman&#8221;.\u00a0 Nice imagery of Aquaman as a living water being.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover28.jpg\" alt=\"JLA #75\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Aquaman #7 (2003) from the fourth ongoing Aquaman series.\u00a0 DC tried to take this series in a magical direction, but it didn&#8217;t stick with the fans.\u00a0 Regardless, cool swashbuckler-like cover from Yvel Guichet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover29.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #7\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A nice heroic Aquaman by Howard Porter &#8211; Aquaman #12 (2004).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover30.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #12\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A return to a more traditional Aquaman look and story &#8211; Aquaman #19 (2004).\u00a0 Great Silver Age-like cover from Alan Davis!\u00a0 I really enjoyed this particular run by Will Pfeifer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover31.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #19\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I just thought this was a cool demonstration of what Aquaman could do with his water hand by\u00a0Patrick Gleason &#8211; Aquaman #29 (2005).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover32.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #29\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A cool cover that symbolizes the storyline where Black Manta was using Aquaman&#8217;s DNA against him.\u00a0 Another cover by Patrick Gleason &#8211; Aquaman #32 (2005).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover33.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #32\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The issue that changed everything &#8211; Aquaman #40 (2006)!\u00a0 A new character took over the role of Aquaman in this Kurt Busiek-written issue.\u00a0 This was the beginning of the Sword-and-Sorcery era.\u00a0 Upon second reading, I really fell in love with these Busiek stories and Butch Guice&#8217;s art was perfect.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover34.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #40\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This image was used on the cover of Aquaman #54 (2007).\u00a0 An attractive piece featuring the new Aquaman by Terry Dodson &amp; Rachel Dodson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover35.jpg\" alt=\"Aquaman v6 #54\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The new Aquaman schools the Man of Steel in this great cover by Shane Davis for Superman\/Batman #45 (2008).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/aquacover36.jpg\" alt=\"Superman\/Batman #45\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This next one is a really neat one.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a cover recreation of <a title=\"Iron Man #120 original cover\" href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.org\/coverview.lasso?id=33217&amp;zoom=4\" class=\"broken_link\">IRON MAN #120<\/a> with Aquaman instead of Namor.\u00a0 The drawing was done by the original artist, Bob Layton, and commissioned by Vincent P.
