{"id":3364,"date":"2010-05-11T06:45:56","date_gmt":"2010-05-11T10:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/?p=3364"},"modified":"2010-05-11T01:08:29","modified_gmt":"2010-05-11T05:08:29","slug":"review-iron-man-x-men-animated-series-on-dvd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/wordpress\/2010\/05\/11\/review-iron-man-x-men-animated-series-on-dvd\/","title":{"rendered":"REVIEW: Iron Man &#038; X-Men Animated Series on DVD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just last week Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released <em>Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series<\/em> and the <em>X-Men: Animated Series Volume 5<\/em>.\u00a0 These cartoons from the 1990s hold a special place in my heart and I&#8217;m thrilled both entire series are now available on DVD.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">IRON MAN<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/iron_man_cartoon1.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" width=\"318\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Need more Iron Man action after seeing the new movie?\u00a0 Then look no further!\u00a0 The release of <em>Iron Man: The Complete Animated Series<\/em> was clearly timed to coincide with <em>Iron Man 2<\/em> in theaters. The <em>Iron Man<\/em> cartoon originally debuted on the Fox Kids network in 1994 as part of the <em>Marvel Action Hour<\/em>, along with the <em>Fantastic Four<\/em>.\u00a0 The series ran in syndication through 1996 and featured Robert Hays (<em>Airplane<\/em>, <em>Starman<\/em> TV series) as the voice of Tony Stark.\u00a0 The series ran for two seasons.\u00a0 Like the <em>Fantastic Four<\/em> cartoon, the <em>Iron Man<\/em> cartoon was dramatically revamped for the second season.\u00a0 Season one was animated by Rainbow Animation Group, whereas the second season was animated by Koko Enterprises.\u00a0 This resulted in a slightly different look for the second season, as well as completely different opening credits and theme music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/iron_man_cartoon2.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" width=\"500\" height=\"384\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e64984&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike the <em>X-Men<\/em> cartoon which relied heavily on the comic book source material, the first season of the <em>Iron Man<\/em> series provided mostly original stories and had more self-contained episodes.\u00a0 I believe this made the cartoon more accessible for new viewers not indoctrinated in years and years of comic continuity.\u00a0 In the second season they started adapting more and more stories from the comics.\u00a0 The series had numerous appearances by Iron Man&#8217;s allies, like War Machine, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Woman, and Century.\u00a0 Some of you clever comic fans are saying to yourselves&#8230;\u00a0 seriously, <em>Force Works<\/em>?!?!?\u00a0 The cartoon featured the characters of <em>Force Works<\/em>?!?!?\u00a0 Yup.\u00a0 Additionally, Iron Man battled foes such as: Mandarin, MODOK, Fin Fang Foom, Justin Hammer, Titanium Man, Whirlwind, Blacklash, Dreadknight, Blizzard, Grey Gargoyle, Hypnotia, and Living Laser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/iron_man_cartoon3.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" width=\"500\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e64982&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You gotta take the good with the bad. This three-DVD collection contains the entire animated series &#8211; all 26 episodes.\u00a0 Sadly, the collection doesn&#8217;t have any special features.\u00a0 While I was disappointed initially, the trade-off is the large number of episodes in the collection.\u00a0 Next, the animation in this series is sometimes hit and miss.\u00a0 Sometimes the art wasn&#8217;t as strong as you&#8217;d hope for and detracted from the great storytelling.\u00a0 However, it&#8217;s worth noting that the animation improved as the series went on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/iron_man_cartoon4.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" width=\"500\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e64979&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I&#8217;d recommend this DVD collection to fans of Iron Man and fans of superhero cartoons.\u00a0 If the early episodes don&#8217;t strike your fancy, hang around for the second season.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/iron_man_cartoon5.jpg\" alt=\"Iron Man The Animated Series on DVD\" width=\"500\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e64977&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">X-Men<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"X-Men Animated Series volume 5\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/x-mencartoon1.jpg\" alt=\"X-Men Animated Series volume 5\" width=\"310\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Volume 5 of <em>X-Men the Animated Series<\/em> finishes out the show with episodes 63-76.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard for me to find new things to say about this fantastic series &#8211; <a title=\"X-Men Volume I &amp; 2 Review\" href=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/2009\/05\/07\/review-x-men-the-animated-series-on-dvd\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here for my review of volumes 1 &amp; 2<\/a> and <a title=\"X-Men Animated Series volumes 3 &amp; 4\" href=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/2009\/09\/22\/review-x-men-animated-series-dvds-vol-3-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here for my review of volumes 3 &amp; 4<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>X-Men the Animated Series<\/em> is one of the more beloved cartoons to come out of the 1990s.\u00a0 This series ran on Fox from 1992-1997 for five seasons with a total of 76 episodes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"X-Men the Animated Series\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/x-mencartoon2.jpg\" alt=\"X-Men the Animated Series\" width=\"500\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e65563&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The series did such an excellent job adapting comic book stories to the small screen.\u00a0 The first disc kicks off with a two-part adaptation of the comic crossover, &#8220;The Phalanx Covenant&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 In this story they introduce Warlock to the animated universe.\u00a0 While they couldn&#8217;t exactly reproduce Bill Sienkiewicz&#8217;s Warlock design in the cartoon, they did a fair job on the character. Another great episode is on the second disc entitled &#8220;Old Soldiers&#8221;.\u00a0 This episode features Logan teaming up with Captain America during World War II.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"X-Men the Animated Series\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/x-mencartoon3.jpg\" alt=\"X-Men the Animated Series\" width=\"500\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><code><iframe frameborder=0 width=352 height=284 src=\"http:\/\/www.totaleclips.com\/player\/Splash.aspx?custid=907&#038;clipid=e65570&#038;playerid=69&#038;affiliateid=-1&#038;bitrateid=378&#038;formatid=10\"><\/iframe><\/code><\/p>\n<p once you step back from that and look at the big picture, you&#8217;ll realize this was truly one of the best comic book-adapted cartoons of all time.\u00a0 I&#8217;d highly recommend this volume and
