{"id":3759,"date":"2010-07-12T06:45:37","date_gmt":"2010-07-12T10:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/?p=3759"},"modified":"2010-07-11T21:29:52","modified_gmt":"2010-07-12T01:29:52","slug":"neil-gaimans-death-from-sandman-in-non-vertigo-comics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/12\/neil-gaimans-death-from-sandman-in-non-vertigo-comics\/","title":{"rendered":"Neil Gaiman&#8217;s Death (from Sandman) in non-Vertigo Comics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You&#8217;ve probably already heard, but Neil Gaiman&#8217;s Death (from <em>Sandman<\/em>) is scheduled to appear  in the October issue of <em>Action Comics<\/em>.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t the first time Death has appeared in a superhero comic.\u00a0 Here are two examples where Death appeared outside of the <em>Vertigo <\/em>line.\u00a0 It hasn&#8217;t happened very often and it was long ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Probably the most effective use of Death outside of <em>Vertigo <\/em>was her cameo in <em>Legion of Super-Heroes<\/em> #38 in 1992.\u00a0 The story featured the destruction of the planet Earth in the 30th century.\u00a0 After centuries of pollution and damage from alien invasions, the Earth could no longer sustain itself.\u00a0 Many evacuated the planet, but over two billion were left behind when the Earth exploded.\u00a0 While Death wasn&#8217;t mentioned by name, she appeared in the art very effectively.\u00a0 The explosion in her left eye is a carry-over from the previous two pages (an enormous two-page splash of the Earth exploding).\u00a0 This story was incredibly powerful, written as prose with a single art panel per page.\u00a0 Seriously, this one will move you to tears.\u00a0 Below you&#8217;ll find the one panel she appeared in.<\/p>\n<p><em>LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES<\/em> #38 (Late December 1992): &#8220;Requiem&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plot &amp; Breakdowns: Keith Giffen<\/li>\n<li>Dialogue &amp;   Story Assist: Tom &amp; Mary Bierbaum<\/li>\n<li>Pencils &amp; Story   Assist: Jason Pearson<\/li>\n<li>Inks: Karl Story<\/li>\n<li>Colors: Tom   McCraw<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Neil Gaiman's Death from Sandman in Legion of Super-Heroes\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/death_legion.jpg\" alt=\"Neil Gaiman's Death from Sandman in Legion of Super-Heroes\" width=\"700\" height=\"1099\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Death also appeared in <em>Captain Atom<\/em> #42 in 1990.\u00a0 The story featured Captain Atom in the afterlife.\u00a0 Interestingly enough, this comic was Death&#8217;s third appearance anywhere (previously appearing only in <em>Sandman<\/em> #8 &amp; #13), making this her first appearance outside of the <em>Sandman<\/em> title.\u00a0 Also worth mentioning was seeing Death side-by-side with the Black Racer.\u00a0 Pretty neat!\u00a0 A final point of interest is that Nekron (of <em>Blackest Night<\/em> fame) is also featured prominently in this issue and the next.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clearly artistic guidelines hadn&#8217;t been set for the Death character at this point. You&#8217;ll see she&#8217;s drawn very chesty, and her skin is normal color (albeit with a white outline).\u00a0 I suppose you could &#8220;No Prize&#8221; this by stating that Death appears differently to different folks.\u00a0 Perhaps Captain Atom has a thing for tan, busty Goth chics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below you&#8217;ll find one page featuring Death.\u00a0 She appeared on several pages in the issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>CAPTAIN ATOM<\/em> #42 (June 1990): &#8220;The Long Journey Home&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li> Writers: Cary Bates &amp; Greg Weisman<\/li>\n<li> Penciller: Rafael Kayanan<\/li>\n<li> Inker: Romeo Tanghal<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"> Colors: Gene D&#8217;Angelo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Neil Gaiman's Death from Sandman in Captain Atom\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/death_captainatom.jpg\" alt=\"Neil Gaiman's Death from Sandman in Captain Atom\" width=\"700\" height=\"1037\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Death had two other non-<em>Vertigo<\/em> appearances in 1992.\u00a0 Both brief appearances were written by Keith Giffen and intended for laughs.\u00a0 Sorry folks, my longboxes containing those issues are at the bottom of the stack.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not worth digging them out and scanning a cameo gag appearance.\u00a0 Interestingly, three of the four appearances outside of <em>Vertigo <\/em>were written by Keith Giffen.\u00a0 That guy must have some clout.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><em>Lobo&#8217;s Back<\/em> #3 (Oct. 1992)<\/li>\n<li><em>Ambush Bug Nothing Special<\/em> #1 (Sept. 1992)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a complete listing of Death&#8217;s appearances, <a title=\"Death on the Comic Book Database\" all these appearances we&#8217;ve discussed were outside of <em>Vertigo<\/em>, it&#8217;s fair to point out that the <em>Vertigo <\/em>imprint didn&#8217;t exist until 1993.\u00a0 So if you wanted to get technical, you could say all her appearances prior to 1993 were also outside of <em>Vertigo<\/em> (including her early <em>Sandman <\/em>appearances).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below
