Yesterday we looked at <em>Justice League<\/em>, the <em>Dr. Fate<\/em> mini-series, and an <em>Amethyst<\/em> mini-series.\u00a0 Today we&#8217;ll delve into the seedier side of the DCU by looking at a couple of their espionage titles and a group of misfits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below you&#8217;ll find an ad for the <em>Suicide Squad<\/em>.\u00a0 What a super-cool comic!\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know what to expect back when it launched based upon the description, but this series has proven to be one of my favorites from the 1980s.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a real testament to John Ostrander that he kept the series so interesting.\u00a0 The premise of the series could have gotten old really quick, but Ostrander managed to surprise us for over 60 issues.\u00a0 Such a great writer!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Suicide Squad by John Ostrander, Luke McDonnell, Karl Kesel advertisement\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/87suicidesquad.jpg\" alt=\"Suicide Squad by John Ostrander, Luke McDonnell, Karl Kesel advertisement\" width=\"700\" height=\"1045\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here is the cover to <em>Suicide Squad<\/em> #1.\u00a0 I love it when the house ad is completely different from the cover to the first issue.\u00a0 It just shows the publisher was making an effort to generate some buzz for the book.\u00a0 This series launched in  February 1987.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve never read this series, seriously consider investing in the back issues (available from <a title=\"Suicide Squad at Mile High Comics\" href=\"http:\/\/milehighcomics.com\/cgi-bin\/backissue.cgi?action=list&amp;title=83407045856&amp;snumber=1\" target=\"_blank\">Mile High Comics<\/a> and very affordable) or wait for the January 2011 trade paperback collecting the first eight issues.\u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s worth your time and money.\u00a0 Great stuff!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Suicide Squad #1 by John Ostrander, Luke McDonnell, Karl Kesel\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/87suicidesquad_c.jpg\" alt=\"Suicide Squad #1 by John Ostrander, Luke McDonnell, Karl Kesel\" width=\"400\" height=\"601\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next up is an advertisement for <em>Checkmate<\/em>.\u00a0 This Paul Kupperberg book complimented <em>Suicide Squad<\/em> well with all the espionage and intrigue.\u00a0 Note in the ad below that subscribers could get a <em>Checkmate <\/em>poster and a signed copy of issue #1.\u00a0 Neat!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Checkmate by Paul Kupperberg, Steve Erwin, Al Vey advertisement\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/87checkmate.jpg\" alt=\"Checkmate by Paul Kupperberg, Steve Erwin, Al Vey advertisement\" width=\"700\" height=\"1047\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Again, I love it when the house ad is completely different from the cover to  the first style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next up is an advertisement for <em>The Doom Patrol<\/em>, another Paul Kupperberg book.\u00a0 This one launched with artist Steve Lightle, but Erik Larsen (of <em>Savage Dragon<\/em> fame) took over shortly after the series premiered.\u00a0 That all changed by issue #19 when some mostly-unknown guy named Grant Morrison took over the series.\u00a0 I wonder what ever happened to that guy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Doom Patrol by Paul Kupperberg, Steve Lightle, Gary
