My good buddy Ed started a really interesting discussion topic over on THE UNIQUE GEEK listserv – Who are your favorite Doctor Who<\/em> companions?<\/a> I’ve put together my list broken into three categories: current series, classic series, and expanded universe.\u00a0 As a frame of reference, click here for a list of all companions on Doctor Who<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Doctor<\/p>\n

CURRENT SERIES<\/h4>\n

Here are my favorite companions in preference order from the current television series:<\/p>\n

  1. Donna Noble<\/li>\n
  2. Rose Tyler – During the first season with Christopher Eccleston. She was mostly forgettable with Tennant, with the exception of “Doomsday”<\/em>.<\/li>\n
  3. Amy Pond<\/li>\n
  4. Wilfred Mott (Donna’s granddad)<\/li>\n
  5. Lady Christina de Souza (from the “Planet of the Dead”<\/em> special) – Admittedly she didn’t travel in the TARDIS, but she was super-cool and would have been a fantastic ongoing companion. I’m glad she got the flying bus.<\/li>\n
  6. Captain Jack Harkness<\/li>\n
  7. Rory Williams<\/li>\n
  8. Martha Jones – She had amazing promise in her first episode, but it never played out.<\/li>\n
  9. Mickey Smith<\/li>\n
  10. River Song – Counting her as a companion is questionable.\u00a0 I really don’t care for this actress, so liking the character is difficult.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    CLASSIC SERIES<\/h4>\n

    Here are my top ten favorite companions from the classic series. There are nearly 30 classic series companions to choose from.\u00a0 One character that would probably have been my top choice, but never actually traveled with the Doctor was Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.\u00a0 He was absolutely brilliant, but was never really a companion.<\/p>\n

    2. Ace (7th Doctor)<\/li>\n
    3. Jamie McCrimmon (2nd Doctor)<\/li>\n
    4. Romana II (4th Doctor)<\/li>\n
    5. Zoe Heriot (2nd Doctor)<\/li>\n
    6. K-9 (4th Doctor)<\/li>\n
    7. Harry Sullivan (4th Doctor)<\/li>\n
    8. Ian Chesterton (1st Doctor)<\/li>\n
    9. Jo Grant (3rd Doctor)<\/li>\n
    10. Tegan Jovanka (4th and 5th Doctor) – very annoying character, but I liked her anyway.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      EXPANDED UNIVERSE<\/h4>\n

      I’m probably one of the few people to care about this category. There have been around 80 companions in the various expanded universe stories (i.e. Big Finish audios and books; Doctor Who Magazine<\/em> comic strip; original novels by Virgin, BBC, and Telos; other comic strips over the years, and more).\u00a0 Here are two links to lists of expanded universe companions for reference:<\/p>\n
