{"id":4482,"date":"2010-11-08T06:45:46","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T10:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/?p=4482"},"modified":"2010-11-07T18:05:16","modified_gmt":"2010-11-07T22:05:16","slug":"i-miss-the-ultraverse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/wordpress\/2010\/11\/08\/i-miss-the-ultraverse\/","title":{"rendered":"I Miss the Ultraverse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I miss the <em>Ultraverse<\/em>.\u00a0 It was a shining star that burned bright and was extinguished before it&#8217;s time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back in early 1993, Malibu Comics launched a line of superhero titles under the <a title=\"Malibu's Ultraverse\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultraverse\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Ultraverse<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>imprint.\u00a0 It was designed to be a shared universe where the characters could crossover and interact whenever the writers wanted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Hardcase from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_hardcase.jpg\" alt=\"Hardcase from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"613\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Prime from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_prime.jpg\" alt=\"Prime from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"587\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Mantra from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_mantra.jpg\" alt=\"Mantra from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The early 1990s was the era of the comics boom.\u00a0 Beyond just Marvel and DC, there were major competitors entering the field like Image, Valiant, and even Dark Horse&#8217;s line of superhero comics.\u00a0 Malibu chose to pattern the<em> Ultraverse <\/em>after Valiant&#8217;s success with a cohesive universe and tight continuity.\u00a0 The <em>Ultraverse <\/em>did fairly well, starting with just a handful of titles and then expanding.\u00a0 In addition to great stories, these books offered readers higher-quality paper and cutting edge digital coloring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Freex from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_freex.jpg\" alt=\"Freex from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"612\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the cornerstones of the <em>Ultraverse <\/em>was their creators.\u00a0 They recruited comics legends as well as up-and-coming stars.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is a list of just some of the creators and the books they worked on:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>George Perez &#8211; <em>UltraForce<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Barry Windsor-Smith &#8211; <em>Rune <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Terry Dodson &#8211; <em>Mantra<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Norm Breyfogle &#8211; <em>Prime<\/em>, <em>Hardcase<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Darick Robertson &#8211; <em>The Night Man<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Cully Hamner &#8211; <em>Firearm<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Howard Chaykin &#8211; <em>Firearm<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Paul Pelletier &#8211; <em>Exiles<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Aaron Lopresti &#8211; <em>Sludge<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Jeff Johnson &#8211; <em>Solitaire<\/em><\/li>\n<li>James Robinson &#8211; <em>Firearm<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mike W. Barr &#8211; <em>Mantra<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Steve Gerber &#8211; <em>Exiles<\/em>, <em>Sludge<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Steve Englehart &#8211; <em>Strangers<\/em>, <em>The Night Man<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Gerard Jones &#8211; <em>Prime<\/em>, <em>Freex<\/em>, <em>UltraForce<\/em>, <em>Solitaire<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Len Strazewski &#8211; <em>Prime<\/em>, <em>Prototype<\/em><\/li>\n<li>James Hudnall &#8211; <em>Hardcase <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Prototype from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_prototype.jpg\" alt=\"Prototype from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"602\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My personal favorites were: <em>Prime<\/em>, <em>Firearm<\/em>, <em>Freex<\/em>, <em>Prototype<\/em>, and <em>The Night Man<\/em>.\u00a0 These stories were full of creativity and energy!\u00a0 You could tell the writers and artists were excited to build these new characters and the <em>Ultraverse <\/em>world.\u00a0 For me, it was thrilling to be there on the ground floor of a shared universe.\u00a0 Malibu was great about interconnecting the books with crossovers, previews, and character team-ups.\u00a0 I imagine the excitement I felt must have been how Marvel fans felt in the 1960s.\u00a0 This was the beginning of something big!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"The Night Man from the Malibu Ultraverse\" src=\"http:\/\/onceuponageek.com\/images\/ultra_nightman.jpg\" alt=\"The Night Man from the Malibu Ultraverse\" width=\"400\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Marvel Comics purchased Malibu and began shutting down the <em>Ultraverse <\/em>by 1995.\u00a0 There were some botched attempts to relaunch the <em>Ultraverse <\/em>by Marvel, including crossovers with Marvel characters and even a Saturday morning cartoon.\u00a0 By 1997 the party was over.
