I was reading an old comic\u00a0this weekend from 1997, and as I noticed\u00a0the ads\u00a0I picked up on something.\u00a0 There were actually quite a few good comics being published in 1997.\u00a0 Surprise!\u00a0 We typically think of the 1990’s as an ugly period in comic publishing history,\u00a0but after thinking about it, I realized that 1997 was a particularly good year.\u00a0 Below are some titles that either came out that year or were already being published. I’ve tried to include hyperlinks for titles you may not be familiar with.<\/p>\n
Tangent comics<\/a> first wave was published<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The electric Superman saga<\/a> started … well, I liked it<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Adventures in the DC Universe<\/a>\u00a0– Based upon the success of Batman and Superman animated series, this comic gave the animated treatment to the rest of the DCU (years before Justice League Unlimited came about).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n JLA<\/a> by Grant Morrison started<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Batman and Superman Adventures: World’s Finest<\/a>\u00a0– Adapted the animated cartoon in which Superman and Batman crossed over (again, prior to Justice League cartoon)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n DC Plus comics<\/a> (not the Scare Tactics issues) – Batman Plus Arsenal, Flash Plus Nightwing, Sovereign Seven Plus Legion of Superheroes,\u00a0 Supergirl Plus Mary Marvel, Superman Plus Legion of Super-heroes, Wonder Woman Plus Jesse Quick<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Two Birds of Prey<\/a> one-shots (prior to the monthly series)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Justice Riders<\/a> Elseworlds one-shot<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Batman\/Wildcat<\/a> – Great mini-series by Chuck Dixon and Beau Smith<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The Shade<\/a> mini-series – Mini-series spun-off from Starman comic<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Alpha Flight volume 2<\/a>\u00a0– Under-appreciated\u00a0short-lived run of Alpha Flight by Steven Seagle and\u00a0Duncan Rouleau started.\u00a0 Good stuff!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Thunderbolts<\/a> first appeared.\u00a0 What an awesome series!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Starman<\/a> by James Robinson<\/a> and Supergirl<\/a> by Peter David<\/a> were being published.\u00a0 They didn’t start in 1997, but they did continue through that year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
