I’m officially swearing my allegiance to DC again

DC ComicsAmongst my friends, there has been a lot of discussion lately around our dissatisfaction with the current direction of DC comics.  Some have gone as far as to “resign” from DC fandom.  Even though I’ve historically been a “DC guy”, I’ve recently found myself being very vocal about my own dissatisfaction with DC comics.  Additionally, many traditional DC fans have been finding a safe harbor in the Marvel universe more and more (myself included).  Well… today I’m changing my song.  While I still enjoy several Marvel comics and will continue to buy them, I’m officially declaring my allegiance to DC comics once again!

Yes, I personally believe that “Countdown” sucked.  Yes, I’m nervous about “Final Crisis” being a let down.  Yes, I’m sick of all the crossovers.  Yes, I’m suffering from event fatigue.  However, after listening to several DC podcasts that were recorded at the New York ComicCon, I found myself realizing that my heart still belongs to DC.  Besides naturally being drawn to their characters, they have a lot of good talent right now that are working their butts off to create some good comics.  Not every effort is successful, but they’re very passionate and their stories are great for the most part.

Once I felt reconnected with the fantastic stable of authors DC has, I realized that my dissatisfaction with DC was limited to just a few things.  Most of which I’ve heard were editorially driven anyway.  I believe my unhappiness grew like many other negative feelings in life…  Once you find yourself unhappy with one aspect of something, you typically continue in a downward spiral about the entire something.  You find yourself feeling negative about everything, simply because a few things have set you off.  Well, a few bad apples haven’t spoiled the DC barrel; I’ve just got to look past the bruised fruit.  I really think DC has some outstanding authors and I’m glad I’ve come to my senses.

Here are a few creators I think very highly of at DC and the books they are working on right now:

Other good comics worth mentioning: Fables, Green Lantern Corps, Countdown to Adventure, Birds of Prey, All-New Atom, JLA (once they stop all the crossovers), Teen Titans, Suicide SquadTangent: Superman’s Reign, and I’m looking forward to The War that Time Forgot.

I’m sure I left off several other outstanding creators and comics.  However, this list is enough to remind me just how great the current creators at DC are.

Here is the link to the DC Podcasts from New York Comic Con. You can also find them on iTunes.  With so many good creators and comics, you can’t help but get energized by the buzz they create.

I’m glad I opened my eyes again and realized just how great DC is right now.

  1. Glad you are finally looking at it like that. Here’s the great thing about comics: If a run of them is bad, quit buying them 🙂

Plus I have really started taking the attitude that I am going to simply follow writers I like. Until those writers let me down, why not follow them 🙂

  2. I appreciate your sentiment, but am not personally convinced. There have been too many times where I thought, “Hey, it’s getting better,” only to have those hopes dashed.

Still, they appear to be going in a new direction. Only time will tell if it is lip service.
