Sandman comic book advertisement – 1988

“A horror-edged fantasy, set in the DC Universe.”

Wow.  The editorial staff that put this ad together had no idea where this comic was going to go, did they?

  1. I don’t know. The early part of Sandman is horror-fantasy, and it is set in the DCU. I mean, the Justice League, Hector & Lyta Hall, and Doctor Destiny both show up in the first storyline.

I remember when, leading up to Infinite Crisis, Daniel showed up in JSA and saved his parents. My friend Joe, who had never read Sandman, immediately called me and said “Okay, what the hell just happened?!” 🙂

  2. When I think about Sandman, the word “terror” doesn’t immediately spring to mind.

A better line might be “Sandman: He will Goth the sh*t out of you!” 😉

  3. Yeah… the first several issues were heavily horror based. The scene with doctor Destiny in the diner is pretty brutal.

    The ad seems spot on.

  4. I don’t know, that story where Doctor Destiny locks a bunch of people in a diner for 24 hours is pretty disturbing. Retrieving the bag of dream sand from John Constantine’s ex is up there, too.
