Star Trek vs Doctor Who

Daleks, and Klingons, and Cybermen!  Oh, my!

This insanely cool Star Trek and Doctor Who mash-up was done for Wizard Magazine by Mike Mayhew and Rain Beredo.  Click the image to enlarge.

Star Trek vs Doctor Who by Mike Mayhew and Rain Beredo

So you gotta ask yourself, is this just an awesome image, or is this the beginning of some terrible fan fiction?  Assume for a moment that it’s a story, it goes without saying that Kirk would make out with Amy.  Would it then become “slash fiction”, or is that just so obvious that it’s not a problem?  :)

My thanks to Ed from THE UNIQUE GEEK listserv for directing me to this image.  Check out Mike Mayhew’s deviantART page by clicking hereVisit Rain Beredo’s deviantART page by clicking here.

Listen Up: Marvel Star Wars Shira Brie Saga

I love me some old Marvel Star Wars comics! Of the 107 issues, I firmly believe the Shira Brie saga spanning issues 60 through 63 were some of the best of the series!  Scott and Chris of Two True Freaks were kind enough to invite me onto their podcast recently to discuss this fantastic storyline!  Scott and I are so passionate about this story, they had to break the episode into two parts because we talked so much!  What’s not to love about these comics?!?!  David Michelinie’s plots and scripts, Walt Simonson’s plots and pencils, with Tom Palmer’s inks.  If you know your Star Wars Expanded Universe lore, then you understand the importance of this storyline.  Pure awesome!

Two True Freaks Star Wars Monthly Monday #27 - The Shira Brie Saga

Here are the tongue-in-cheek descriptions of the episodes from their website:

Two True Freaks Episode 173 – Star Wars Monthly Monday #27: Part I

This month, the Freaks are joined by The Irredeemable Shag for their coverage of Marvel Star Wars #60-63. This episode was sooo long it had to be broken into TWO HUGE HALVES! Why so long, you ask? Well, it seems Shag and Scott (two grown men, mind you) love Shira Brie like an emo teen girl loves Justin Bieber.

Listen to them babble on endlessly about their girlfriend Shira Brie. What is her favorite color? Do you think she would like Scott’s new haircut? Shag has never washed his eyes since the first time he saw her in the comics! Honestly, these are “adult”, married men- I don’t know about Shag, but Scott even has kids. How healthy is it for them to have hot pants for a comic book character?

Two True Freaks Episode 173 – Star Wars Monthly Monday #27: Part II

Here’s the second half – featuring issues #62 and 63. Scott and Shag make moon-eyes at pictures of Shira, describe what their “dream date with Shira” would be like, and basically make you wonder which one of them has the bigger creepy Shira Brie shrine in their back shed. Brought to you by RICH POWERS!

My thanks to Scott and Chris for letting me appear on their show to discuss this phenomenal storyline!  Be sure to check out Two True Freaks!

Nerd Lunch: The Web Series

Nerd Lunch: The Web Series

You gotta check out NERD LUNCH: THE WEB SERIES!  These funtastic videos are produced by folks here in my own hometown, and include things of interest to nerds and fans of lunch everywhere!  The second episode was released just yesterday.  Each episode runs about 11 minutes and is well worth your time.  Check ‘em out and tell ‘em Shag sent you!

While you’re at it, check out the websites for the co-hosts — C.T. of NERD LUNCH and Savannah of THE TALLY TYPE.

Now, they use the word “nerd”, whereas I typically use the word “geek”.  This is a common disagreement amongst “our people”.  There is a diagram I love to use to distinguish between the various “nerd” categories.  As defined by the diagram below, I fall firmly in the “geek” category.    Where do you fall?

I interviewed comic book legend John Ostrander!

Firestorm Fan interview with John OstranderSorry I haven’t been posting here lately (more on that in the coming weeks).  To make things worse, I’m not even going to give you a real post today. Instead I’m going to direct you over to my other blog FIRESTORM FAN where I’ve posted my interview with comic book legend John Ostrander!

John Ostrander started in the comic book business in 1983 and was incredibly successful.  By 1987 he was writing five different monthly titles!  He is best known for his work on SUICIDE SQUAD, GRIMJACK, THE SPECTRE, and STAR WARS: LEGACY.  Ostrander has written hundreds of fantastic comics and was nominated for the Comics Buyer’s Guide Award for Favorite Writer in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000.  Ostrander wrote 45 issues of FIRESTORM vol II from 1987 through 1990.   Besides Firestorm co-creator Gerry Conway, Ostrander has written the character more than any other author.  Probably his most lasting contribution to the DC Universe was the recasting of the former Batgirl, Barbara Gordon, into the information and computer specialist Oracle.  Currently he is working on STAR WARS LEGACY: WAR from Dark Horse Comics.

John was kind enough to spend some time discussing his run on Firestorm with me for FIRESTORM FAN.  We discussed how Ostrander broke into the business, his time on the Firestorm comic, and his career in general.

So head over to FIRESTORM FAN.com and check out comic book legend John Ostrander.

Back to the Future… or not

Back to the Future humor

Y’know, it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when the future predicted in Back to the Future Part II was more creative than the real future we live in nowadays.  Ugh.

My thanks to Dug from THE UNIQUE GEEK for directing me to this comic on COMIXED.com.

The Irredeemable Ant-Man is Irredeemable Once Again

Marvel just finished a fun three-issue mini-series entitled, Ant-Man & Wasp.  It was written and penciled by Tim Seeley with inks by Victor Olazaba.  The mini-series has action, humor, and some cool science.  I’m a big fan of the All-New Ant-Man as well as Hank Pym.  If you like either of these characters, I highly recommend you pick it up.

Ant-Man & Wasp #1

I’ve always liked the Hank Pym character.  He was one of Marvel’s first heroes, yet he’s such a wreck.  All the problems he’s had over the years make him a lot more interesting than most other squeaky-clean heroes.  He’s constantly searching for redemption.

Ant-Man & Wasp #2

I absolutely loved the short-lived comic, The Irredeemable Ant-Man! That series launched back in 2006 and only lasted 12 issues.  I enjoyed it so much, I stole my “Irredeemable” moniker from that comic.  As the new Ant-Man, Eric O’Grady made for a poor superhero and a despicable human being — but dang was the comic hilarious!  Since the cancellation of The Irredeemable Ant-Man, Eric has been relabeled the “All-New” Ant-Man appearing in series such as Avengers The Initiative, Thunderbolts, and Secret Avengers.  Eric is the antithesis of Hank.  Pym is always seeking redemption for his actions, whereas Eric revels in his disgraceful behavior.

Ant-Man & Wasp #3

Below is a page from Ant-Man & Wasp that demonstrates Hank’s efforts to make up for his mistakes…

Hank Pym as the Wasp from Ant-Man & Wasp #1

Eric O’Grady has mellowed since his Irredeemable days, but this series still kicks off with a truly Irredeemable-like moment…

Eric O'Grady as the Irredeemable Ant-Man from Ant-Man & Wasp #1

Showing his true Irredeemable colors, Eric follows up by saying, “Y’know, I thought being an Avenger would mean better quality one-night stands, but I still have to send a few down the fire escape so the neighbors don’t see them. Woof.” That’s absolutely horrible, but hilarious at the same time!  I was happy to see a moment like this, demonstrating that Eric can still be irredeemable.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t endorse behavior like this.  It’s just that in a world of super-powered people, surely somebody gifted with powers would be a completely dirtbag.  And besides, it’s funny!  During the course of the mini-series, we see that Eric isn’t completely horrible (just mostly).

Here is the description for issue #1:

Two of Marvel’s smallest heroes must join forces and get over one BIG elephant-in-the-room! Eric O’Grady once STOLE the Ant-Man suit from Hank Pym. But now, Eric is the only one who knows about a secret AIM plot to steal Pym’s greatest invention! Can the two men get along long enough to save the soul of the former GOLIATH, Bill Foster?

You can still find Ant-Man & Wasp in stores now!  Check it out!

Disney Fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle

In December, my family and I visited the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.  We had a fantastic time and stayed to watch the fireworks.  We’d seen them from our hotel previously, but never from right in front of the castle.  Wow!  At the start of the fireworks, an actress dressed as Tinkerbell rode a zipline from the very tippy-top of the castle all the way over to Tomorrow Land.  It was amazing to see her ride that high and far!  After that, the fireworks took our breath away.

I snapped a few pictures during the fireworks.  The first couple shows off the icicle-coated castle (a special treat for winter 2010), the rest are from the fireworks.

LIGHTSABER DAYS: Concrete Hustle

Lightsaber Days at ONCE UPON A GEEK

Welcome back for LIGHTSABER DAYS here at ONCE UPON A GEEK! We’re continuing our look at some fan-produced films of lightsaber battles!!

Today’s fan film is entitled CONCRETE HUSTLE! Once again the choreography, effects, and story are outstanding.  Just like with Ryan vs. Dorkman, there are no embarrassing scenes of them pretending to be Jedi or Sith in this one.  This time it’s just a few regular guys in a modern day parking garage fighting with lightsabers and force powers.  Great stuff in this one! Be sure to stay around for the ending! Enjoy!

If you can’t view the embedded video above, please click here.  Come back tomorrow for a different take on a fan-made lightsaber battle!
