Tomorrow the Visitors arrive and they’re here to stay… again.  On Tuesday at 8:00pm the Visitors of “V” once again grace our screens after a 24 year absence. Long time readers of ONCE UPON A GEEK may remember that I’m a big fan of the 1980s phenom “V” (click here for other “V” related posts), so I’m pretty interested in this new series.  Check out the sneak peek below.

Ahhhh… good times.

Worth noting is that Kenneth Johnson, the writer-producer-director of the original “V” mini-series, is not involved in this new “V” television series.  In fact, he’s hoping to produce his own theatrical movie that continues his original story.  He wrote a novel fairly recently entitled V: The Second Generation that follows a similar premise.  You can read my review of the book by clicking here.

This isn’t the first time a relaunch of “V” has been attempted. Back in 1989 Warner Brothers commissioned J. Michael Straczynski (who would later go on to create Babylon 5, and write several successful comic books) to write a pilot screenplay for a proposed new series, tentatively titled V: The Next Chapter, that would have continued the “V” storyline. Picking up five years after the end of the NBC series, it would have followed the efforts of a new Resistance movement on a conquered Earth to make contact with the “Outsiders”, the faction of the Visitors’ own people who oppose their Leader, who had finally responded to a summons put out at the end of the original miniseries. The only character from the older “V” to appear in this script was Ham Tyler. After numerous drafts, the script, entitled “The Rebirth”, was finally abandoned when the studio decided it would be too cost-prohibitive to produce. Remake attempt after remake attempt.  Well… ABC gets the first shot and I’m really looking forward to it.

Long time readers of ONCE UPON A GEEK may remember that I’m a big fan of the 1980s phenom “V” (click here for other “V” related posts).  On Tuesday ABC released two clips from their upcoming “V” reimagining.

ABC’s remake of the 1980s miniseries “V” currently has been ordered for 13 episodes.  However it could consist of four seasons planned in advance, each with 13-22 episodes, according to ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson. The two clips below star Scott Wolf (Party of Five) and Morena Baccarin (Firefly). Wolf plays a journalist while Baccarin plays the alien leader.  Sadly their names are not Mike Donovan and Diana.

Looks pretty good!  However, will it be good enough to generate a spin-off as totally awesome as this?

It was only a matter of time until a new “V” series was announced. Last Thursday, Variety reported that ABC is developing a new “V” series written by Scott Peters (4400, Jericho, Burn Notice, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). The new story will feature some of the original concepts, but it sounds like many will change.

The original “V” served as an allegory for the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. Peters said he won’t duplicate that concept, except that the new “V” will still focus on what happens when the masses have blind faith in their leaders.

In this case, the new “V” will center on Erica Evans, a Homeland Security agent with an aimless son who’s got problems. When the aliens arrive, her son gloms on to them – causing tension within the family. As in the original “V,” several storylines will unfold simultaneously.

But even without the same storyline, the original “V’s” bones will remain: As in the ’80s version, the show will open with an enormous army of spaceships hovering over the world’s major cities. The visitors say they’ve come to help Earth, but their motives are nefarious (in the original, they wanted to steal the world’s water supply).

Another person who has been tapped for involvement with the new story is Jace Hall, former head of Warner Bros.’ videogame division.  Apparently he is planning to expand “V” into other platforms, including gaming.  Very interesting.

Looking for some background noise while I sorted through paperwork Saturday night, I turned on a Sci-Fi channel.  Being Saturday night, they were of course running their monster/creature movie of the week.  This time it was Sabertooth.  A TV movie made back in 2002.  It was pretty predictable for Sci-Fi: wild creature on the loose, young people in an isolated area, a rising body count, and the requisite hot blond. 

The reason I thought this was blog-worthy was just a split second of footage in the beginning.  The very first shot of the movie was an establishing shot of the laboratory where the sabertooth is being held.  The shot of the laboratory was actually stock footage from the old “V” TV series.  It was specifically an exterior shot of the “Science Frontiers” building, even with the sign and logo in the foreground.  “Science Frontiers” in “V” was Nathan Bates company; also the place where Julie Parrish worked.  If I hadn’t been watching the “V” TV series recently, I don’t think I would have noticed.  I checked the web and apparently I’m not the only person to spot this.

I guess I’m just surprised by this.  I suppose the Sabertooth filmmaker needed an exterior shot of the laboratory and using stock footage was the easiest way to do it.  However, seeing something from “V” just took me right out of the story.  After that I just couldn’t completely engross myself in the movie.  Yeah, that’s it.  That MUST be the reason I couldn’t enjoy the film tremendously.  It couldn’t have anything to do with the horrible special effects, weak acting, or threadbare plot.   :)

So I’ve been watching the “V” TV series.  Boy does it stink.  I’ve mentioned it here before, but the original mini-series was really good.  “The Final Battle” was okay.  And the regular TV series is almost unwatchable.  However, as I continue to plod my way through the TV series (why, I really don’t remember anymore), I keep coming back to the same thought.

I’m sure I’m completely wrong, but every time the character of “Nathan Bates” (played by Lane Smith) comes on-screen I think this character must have been the visual basis for “Maxwell Lord” from the Justice League International comic.  The hair, the suits, the cigars, even the jaw line.  Nathan Bates first appeared in October 1984 and Maxwell Lord first appeared in May 1987.  So I guess it’s possible, but I would hope the artist Kevin Maguire had better taste in television than that.

Maybe all corporate-types from the 80’s had this generic look; I don’t really remember.  I just know as I finish watching the “V” TV series that sooner or later Nathan Bates is going to bust out with a, “Bwah-hah-ha”.  That’ll be the clincher.

So I bought and read “V – The Second Generation”. This novel is by Kenneth Johnson, the writer and director of the original “V” mini-series.

On the whole, I enjoyed the book. I think it’s fair to say the story had some interesting ideas and was therefore enjoyable, but the novel itself wasn’t necessarily written well. This is Kenneth Johnson’s second book and you can tell his past experience doesn’t lie in prose. It’s not horrible, but it’s obvious enough that you realize just how much polish goes into most other writer’s novels.

The most surprising thing about this book is that it’s a sequel to the original “V” mini-series, and therefore completely disregards what happened in “V – The Final Battle”, “V – The TV Series”, and most importantly “V – The Comic Book”. Apparently Kenneth Johnson wasn’t associated with “The Final Battle” and had other ideas on how the story should progress.

Interestingly enough, there are certain plot elements from “The Final Battle” the new book seems to go out of its way NOT to contradict. For example, there is no mention of whatever happened with Robin’s pregnancy (resulting in the Starchild in “The Final Battle”). Here is a link to an interview with Kenneth Johnson about the new book. He also outlines his hopes of doing a “V – The Second Generation” mini-series or motion picture.

Without really spoiling anything, the book takes place twenty years following the events of the original mini-series. Earth is still under Visitor domination, and the Resistance is fighting a losing battle. The usuals are there, Mike Donovan, Juliet Parrish, Robert Maxwell, Willy & Harmony, and Diana. There are also lots of new characters, but some of them just come off as younger analogs to the original characters. There is a new young rebellious guy who you can’t help but be reminded of Mike; an idealistic young female leader with shades of Juliet; and the street-talking tough kid who reminds you of Elias, and so on. Interestingly enough, there are also lots of half-breeds; children of a human and a visitor. No special mystical powers here, just half-human half-visitor children. And lastly, remember that message that Julie sent into space at the end of the original miniseries … we finally see who answers the call.

Again, overall I enjoyed some of the ideas, but the writing itself was weak. Would I recommend it? I guess to a fan of the original “V” series I would. The cover reads, “The highly anticipated sequel to the thrilling miniseries V”. I think I would re-write that, “The somewhat anticipated sequel to the thrilling miniseries V… no, not the one with the Red Dust… the other one.”

Anyone else read the book? Anyone else have fond memories of V? I’m currently re-watching the mini-series right now. I’m hoping to make it all the way through the TV series. After reading this book, some sick twisted part of me wants to go back and re-purchase all the old V tie-in novels and read them again (Ravenface and I used to devour these back in mid-80s).
